Ballan Brumbies Under 10 Boys development side took on Celtic Tigers this weekend, looking for their first win of the season. With three players unavailable and no bench to speak of, they were on the back foot even before the jump.
Brumbies youngest side, though, started superbly. Defensively, the boys came out with focus, causing a series of poor passes from Celtic that Reilly Grech was able to either deflect or outright pick off. When Celtic did get to the hoop, Elliott Fest and Marcus Speakman were able to contest shots and control the rebounds.
Fest scored the opening basket of the contest with a baseline jumpshot from a Grech feed. Speakman followed up with a bank shot in traffic as Ballan jumped out to an early lead. The Speakman-to-Grech combination was paying dividends for Ballan; Speakman using his height to pick up rebounds and his long outlet passes to Grech saw the latter repeatedly get out on the break. He did lose the ball on a couple of occasions but was able to connect on an open layup as Ballan extended their advantage.
Eli Seketa, playing some excellent pressure defense, nicked the ball from a Celtic Tiger in the back court, strolling in for the first basket of his young career. Rubbing salt into Celtic wounds, he repeated the trick a couple of minutes later.
Speakman - on his way to a game high 13 points - finished the half with a trio of made baskets coming from assists by Fest, Grech and Will Barnes, before Josh Rudlin finally put Celtic on the board right on half time, giving Ballan a comfortable 16-2 lead at half time.
Celtic were much more on their game in the second half. After a lovely layup by Grech for Ballan, Celtic scored quick baskets through Lachie Tehan and Alex Camac as their team defense finally started to click.
Speakman and Fest were still proving a handful for the Celtic offense, though, their ability to contest shots a problem that was tough to bypass. When Celtic tried to pass around the Brumbies bigs their passes were often picked off, Grech again the beneficiary with a sweet mid-range jumper.
The game slowed down a little in the later stages as Ballan's defense, a tough make by Tehan aside, stymied Celtic's offense. With the ball, Ballan tried to feed Barnes who came close to scoring, Speakman often cleaning up and converting on put backs.
All in all, a wonderful performance from the young Brumbies as they claimed their first win of the season, 25 points to eight.
